Vermouth
Turns out I might be a vermouth guy. I first tried it in Seville at a place called Bar El Comercio, where we stopped for churros.
Vermouth is probably not the first drink you reach for at a time like that, but it called to me from the menu. It might have been the aura of a new town in an strange country that drove me to this impulse. Maybe I thought I could reinvent myself, one tapas bar at a time.
In any case, I’ll try and keep a list of each vermouth I try. Maybe rate them too.
Bar El Comercio
Seville, Spain, Jan 2026. Sweet, red “vermut” that’s apparently homemade. Felt like I’d discovered some secret, even though I was surrounded by tourists. 4/5
Lavomatique restaurant
Nice, France, Feb 2026. Dry, pale color. Herbal flavor that went great with the food. Made me realize that vermouth ain’t just a one trick pony. 4/5
Amsterdam
Feb 2026. Rushali’s apartment before our afternoon flight to Munich. Threw it back as we headed out the door. Also pale colored but sweet instead of herbal. More like a white wine. 2/5
Donghai Lou restaurant
Berlin, March 2026. Weisser vermut. Served room temp. Thicker consistency, and honestly not great. Chemical, medicine-like taste. Herbs, plants, roots, etc. A bit hard to pin down a primary ingredient. Fennel, clove, anise …? Oh well. The food was good, at least! 1/5
